Update from UR Pride

Welcome Week Update
Welcome Week was a blast as always!  It was very nice to meet many new students attending the U of R this year.  We were even able to sign up a few new volunteers!  Good luck this semester.  Drop by the centre between classes and hang out!

Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life
UR Pride as well as the Queer Youth Group took part in the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life.  Thanks to those of you that bought UR Pride Tshirts, we were able to donate about $250 to the Walk between funds raised and personal donations.  Special shout out to Sonia Griffiths (UR Pride Chair)!  Sonia worked for Aids Programs over the summer and into fall and organized the entire Walk and festivities.  You rock!  The Walk brought in over $13,000 in donations which exceeded their goal for this year!

RWRC Open House
The Rainbow Wellness Resource Centre is now officially open!  Thanks to all of the folks that made the Open house such a great event! The RWRC is a new LGBTQ resource centre located at 2070 Broad St. (lower level).  They are selling yearly memberships for $25 which helps support the centre and gives you a vote at the AGM which will take place on October 2nd at 7:00p.m. For more info about the RWRC visit their facebook page here.

Important Dates coming up!
National Coming Out Day - October 11

On Oct. 11, 1987, half a million people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. It was the second such demonstration in our nation’s capital and resulted in the founding of a number of LGBT organizations, including the National Latino/a Gay & Lesbian Organization (LLEGÓ) and AT&T’s LGBT employee group, LEAGUE.  The momentum continued four months after this extraordinary march as more than 100 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists from around the country gathered in Manassas, Va., about 25 miles outside Washington, D.C. Recognizing that the LGBT community often reacted defensively to anti-gay actions, they came up with the idea of a national day to celebrate coming out and chose the anniversary of that second march on Washington to mark it. The originators of the idea were Rob Eichberg, a founder of the personal growth workshop, The Experience, and Jean O'Leary, then head of National Gay Rights Advocates. From this idea the National Coming Out Day was born.

To this day National Coming Out Day continues to promote a safe world for LGBT individuals to live truthfully and openly. - HRC.org

Ally Week October 15-19
