Sports fan and community volunteer to be recognized at Alumni Crowning Achievement Awards gala

University of Regina alumna Twyla Meredith has put her love of sports and superb organizational skills to work. Twice over the last decade, she has helped organize major national sporting events hosted at the University of Regina. In both cases, the events were hugely successful, drawing large crowds and earning a profit that could be invested in future opportunities.

As president and CEO of the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation, she has been generous in giving time to the University and is involved in many other community-based initiatives. In 2002 and 2003, she served as chair of finance for the CIS Women's Hockey Championships hosted at the University of Regina. A few years later, she became chair of the 2009 CIS Women's Basketball Championship, an event that took three years to organize. The event was so successful it is now considered a model for the organization of future championships.

More recently, Meredith has been asked to lend her knowledge and skills to the University in a different way by participating in a CEO Round Table established by the Faculty of Business Administration. The Round Table is an opportunity to bounce ideas and contribute to the future of the faculty, and she feels fortunate to be in a position where she can participate.

She feels alumni have a responsibility to give back to the University and the community. She will be recognized for her volunteerism by the University of Regina and the University of Regina Alumni Association as the recipient of the Dr. Robert and Norma Ferguson Award for Outstanding Service. This award is given to an alumnus or alumna who has shown exceptional leadership and service to the University of Regina or its Alumni Association.

As well as being involved at the University, Meredith sits on the Saskatchewan Roughriders Board of Directors, is president of Casino Regina, and is involved in the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District. She received the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2005 in recognition of her commitment to the community.

"I feel very fortunate to have lived in Regina my whole life," says Meredith. "I was raised to give back - my parents were always contributing to the community. It's an important part of my life."

Meredith will be one of five distinguished alumni who will be honoured at the7th Annual Alumni Crowning Achievement Awards Gala, the pinnacle event of the Alumni Homecoming Weekend taking place September 29 - October 1.
