University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons presented Prince Albert Mayor Jim Scarrow with the University of Regina President’s Community Award at a special ceremony in Prince Albert on Monday, November 28.

The President’s Community Award was created last year in keeping with the University’s commitment to serve the provincial community and to recognize those who have a strong history of working to better the lives of others in Saskatchewan.

“Major lifetime accomplishments and his commitment to community played a role in Mayor Scarrow’s selection for the University of Regina President’s Community Award,” said Timmons.

Prior to becoming Mayor of Prince Albert, Scarrow had a long and distinguished career of service to Saskatchewan. He served as the national president of the Association of Kinsmen Clubs, founding member of the Kinsmen Foundation, and was the producer of the Kinsmen Telemiracle for seven years.

Throughout his time as Mayor, he guided the City through a period of major growth and remained committed to volunteerism. He has been formally recognized as a volunteer and a recipient of the Canada 125 Medal for Community Service Award, the Centennial Medal of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

As part of the award ceremony, Scarrow was recognized for his strong support of Aboriginal post-secondary education in our province and the First Nations University of Canada, a federated college of the University of Regina.

Following the President’s Community Award presentation, Dr. Blair Stonechild, professor of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada delivered a lecture entitled Aboriginal and Mainstream Education – Making the best of Both Worlds.

Timmons was in Prince Albert as part of the University of Regina’s Community Connections Tour, an annual tour of Saskatchewan cities and towns that helps foster business, educational, research and community-based partnerships.
