The University of Regina Cheer Team recently won gold in the Collegiate Coed Division at the Sea To Sky International Cheerleading and Dance Championship in Vancouver.  It is another significant achievement for the program and the University of Regina.

“I want to offer my congratulations to the cheer team. I know the hard work and dedication that the team puts into their sport, and when you understand this, you begin to understand why they have the success that they do, “ says Craig Chamberlin, Dean of Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies. “With the strong leadership on the Cheer Team and within Recreation Services, I know there will be more success in the future.”

Two members of the Team, Kristen Slinn (2nd Year, Campion College) and Jenna Jelinski (4th Year, University of Regina, Faculty of Education) have been selected to Team Canada.  It is the first time students from the University of Regina have been selected to the National Cheerleading Team.

Slinn and Jelinski will travel to the National Training Centre in Mississauga, Ontario to begin their training in preparation of the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Cheerleading Championship, which will be held April 28 and 29 at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando Florida.

“I am extremely excited for the team and our win this weekend,” says Slinn. “We worked extremely hard this season and there couldn't have been a better ending to a great year. I am honored to call myself a part of the University of Regina Cheer Team and I'm glad I got to share such a great accomplishment with such a fantastic group of people.

“I am also extremely excited to represent the U of R on Team Canada, and show the rest of the world what Saskatchewan and Canada has to show at worlds. I am still shocked with the opportunity I have been presented with and can't wait to learn all that I can from this experience".

Jelinski also expressed a great deal of pride in her team.

“This program has come a long way and is one of the most recognized Cheer Programs in Canada,” says Jelinski.  “I will be graduating this year and have been blessed with the privilege of participating on this outstanding team with some tremendous people.  The relationships that I have made will last a lifetime.  Being selected to Team Canada is also humbling and I look forward to representing Canada as well as the University at the upcoming ICU World Championships.  Kristen and I are the first two females from Saskatchewan to ever make Team Canada and this speaks volume for the University of Regina Cheer Program.

The University of Regina Cheerleaders will be holding their Spring Tryouts on Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Queen City Gymnastics.  For more information check out the team's website at www.uofrcheer.com.
