Former Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco received the third annual University of Regina President’s Community Award on Wednesday, November 28.

“Pat Fiacco is very deserving of this award,” said Timmons. “Working tirelessly to promote Regina through initiatives like the nationally known ‘I Love Regina’ campaign, he has brought a renewed sense of pride to our city.  At the same time, he has worked passionately to fulfill an ambitious vision for Regina’s social, community and economic development, building a legacy that will serve our city well for years to come.”

Elected Mayor of Regina in 2000, Fiacco served four terms before leaving office this fall. An active member of local, provincial and national communities, he served on many organizations and on several boards such as the Regina Regional Economic Development Authority (RREDA), Regina Crime Prevention Commission, and Wascana Centre Authority.

Throughout his term as Mayor, Fiacco maintained an active interest in sport, particularly boxing.  He supervised the technical operations of boxing events at the 2012 London Olympic Games, served as a boxing referee and judge at the 2004 Athens Olympics, has held provincial and Canadian amateur boxing championships, and has served as Head Official of Boxing Canada. He has also contributed to the Ken Goff Memorial Boxing Classic, Sask Sport and Hockey Regina.

“I am humbled by this recognition,” said Fiacco. “I have always been passionate about Regina, and if you love what you do, it never feels like you're going to work,” he said.

“The community has given me more than I could ever possibly repay. Thank you to President Timmons for this award," added Fiacco.

Created in 2010, the President’s Community Award recognizes individuals or organizations whose values, history of service to Saskatchewan, and concern for our communities have made a lasting impact on the province.
