Officials from the 26 North American Regions that will compete in the 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Regina will visit the University of Regina campus on Wednesday, April 3.  These officials are in Regina to attend the first “Chef de Mission” meeting (M1) for the Games scheduled for July 20-27, 2014.  The M1 meeting is intended to provide an overview of the organizational structure and facilities that will be utilized for the Games.  Approximately 5000 athletes will compete in 15 sports including archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, box lacrosse, canoe/kayak, golf, rifle shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball and wrestling.

The University of Regina will be a centre of activity during the Games.  The Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport (CKHS) will serve as the venue for basketball and volleyball.  The U of R playing field will be one of the soccer venues.  The Athletes Village at the U of R will provide food services and accommodation for 1800 athletes and coaches.  The Games medical services (Polyclinic) will be located in the CKHS in the Dr. Paul Schwann Centre and Aspen Medical Centre.

The Games Mission Centre, providing office space for each of the 26 regions, will be located on the ground floor of the Institut Francais.

The First Nations University of Canada will serve as the cultural and entertainment centre for the Games.

“The NAIG will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase University of Regina programs and facilities to 5000 potential students.  The Games are another expression of the “indigenization” efforts outlined in our Strategic Plan”, said Don Clark, University of Regina Liaison to the 2014 NAIG.
