Human Justice student vies for Miss World Canada title

It will be a busy couple of weeks for University of Regina student Camille Munro. Not only is she finishing the final semester of her BA in Human Justice, but this May, she will compete as a national finalist in the Miss World Canada Pageant, in the hopes of moving on to the Miss World Pageant in Indonesia later this year. The Miss World Pageant, one of the oldest and most-watched pageants in the world, attracts an astounding two billion views across the globe, and features contestants from 120 countries.

Because of the organization’s focus on fund-raising and humanitarian outreach, Munro views her involvement with Miss World Canada as an opportunity to continue advancing the issues she has become passionate about – specifically, the empowerment of young women. ‘I chose to enter the Miss World Canada Pageant because I am committed to making a difference in the lives of young women’, she says. ‘I hope to share my vision for humanitarian work that can be done throughout Canada with those who can help me make a difference’.

Munro has long been interested in giving back, and it was a remarkable co-op work term with the United Way of Regina that inspired her to transform her humanitarian interests into an academic major in Human Justice. She says, ‘That experience gave me a newfound appreciation for my own life and opportunities. It also opened my eyes to some of the problems people in Regina face every day.’ Munro is also involved with Dress for Success Regina, an organization that helps provide career development resources and professional clothing for underprivileged women entering the workforce.

As the sole Miss World Canada contestant from Regina, Munro feels she has been given a rare opportunity to represent and serve her community. ‘In all areas of my life I have been fortunate enough to work with young women and I believe that there will always be a need for powerful and positive role models in the lives of young women’, she says. ‘For this reason, my platform is empowering young women and teaching them that their potential is endless if they are willing to become educated and put in the work’.
