The Edible Campus of the University of Regina was recently recognized for its contribution to the community and the environment.

The Edible Campus consists of three vegetable gardens that promote community engagement and sustainable development on the University of Regina campus. Last year, more than 70 volunteers maintained the gardens, and 1,500 pounds of produce was harvested and donated to Carmichael Outreach.

Regina’s Edible Campus received a $2,100 grant from Farm Credit Canada’s Regina Spirit Fund, which will be used for infrastructure to help the University gardens increase the quality and quantity of produce that is donated to its charitable partners.

It also received a Recognition Award from the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development in Saskatchewan (RCE) for creating and raising awareness of sustainable food practices in Saskatchewan.

“These awards are another great public acknowledgement of the benefits of the gardens, that will reinforce the social and environmental impact of the Edible Campus in the future,” said Frédéric Dupré, Chairperson for Regina’s Edible Campus. “These successes are the fruit of grassroots work by students, staff and faculty on sustainable local food initiatives for community development.”

Regina’s Edible Campus is the result of a partnership between the University of Regina President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability, the Institut Français, the Regina Public Interest Research Group, First Nations University of Canada, Campion College, Carmichael Outreach, Wascana Centre Authority, and all of its volunteers.
