University flags fly at half-mast for tsunami victims
Flags at the University of Regina will fly at half-mast between Wed., Jan. 5 and Fri., Jan. 7 as a sign of the University community's solidarity with the victims of the Dec. 26 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, and with their families and friends.

Members of the University community - including students, staff, and faculty - have close ties with the affected region.

As the University community reassembles for the start of the winter semester on Thurs., Jan. 6, president David Barnard says students, faculty and staff will be advised on how to contribute to the relief effort by making contributions directly to those aid organizations approved by the federal government to receive matching funds.

"Our world has lost tens of thousands of its citizens to this overwhelming natural event," Barnard said. "It's at a time like this that we remember our community is very much a member of the global community. The disaster has touched friends, neighbours and colleagues in our own community. It is appropriate that we join them in grieving their losses. It is essential that we contribute to the work of relief and reconstruction."

Barnard added that the University administration will consider other initiatives through which members of the University of Regina community can contribute to the massive international relief effort in the coming weeks.
