U of R Associate Dean to receive national award for advancing health and physical education
A University of Regina professor will receive a prestigious national award in Moncton, New Brunswick tomorrow.

Dr. Nick Forsberg, Associate Dean for Student Services and Undergraduate Programs in the U of R’s Faculty of Education, is being awarded the R. Tait McKenzie Award of Honour by the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD). CAHPERD is a national, charitable, voluntary-sector organization whose primary concern is to influence the healthy development of children and youth by advocating for quality, school-based physical and health education.

The R. Tait McKenzie Award of Honour, which is CAHPERD’s highest honour, recognizes Dr. Forsberg for his longstanding commitment to the advancement of health and physical education.

“It is truly an honour to receive this award. I have always believed that the greatest and most rewarding form of recognition is that which comes from peers, and to have this bestowed through an award such as the R. Tait McKenzie is overwhelming,” said Dr. Forsberg. “I consider it a privilege as an educator to have the opportunity to share my passion for the critical importance of Physical Education and Health Education in the lives of children and youth. To be recognized for this passion is deeply humbling.”

Dr. Forsberg, who is a distinguished author and scholar within the health and physical education field, has dedicated his life to ensuring that children and youth across Canada live physically active and healthy lives. He has written numerous articles, edited the On the Move Journal and refereed articles for AVANTE, ERIC and the Journal of Professional Studies. He has given more than 60 presentations at professional and public conferences and meetings provincially, nationally and internationally.

“Dr. Forsberg’s commitment to his field and his high professional standards make him a role model for our students,” said Michael Tymchak, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the U of R. “The inspiration he provides for our students ultimately promotes the vital role of physical education, health and outdoor education in the classrooms and schools of our province, and the nation.”

Dr. Forsberg’s many achievements extend beyond his nearly 20 years of teaching at the University of Regina. He has served as an Executive Member of the Saskatchewan Physical Education Association, Chair of the Saskatchewan Physical Education Council, and an Executive Member of the Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Education Association. He has also been President of CAHPERD, and has served on the organization’s Board of Directors for many years.

Dr. Forsberg will be presented with the award at during the CAHPERD National Conference on Friday, May 11, 2007 in Moncton.
