News Release Release Date: October 25, 2011 12:00 p.m.

One hundred years ago today the cornerstone was laid at Regina College, the forerunner of the University of Regina. To commemorate the occasion, the City of Regina has proclaimed October 25, 2011 "University of Regina Day." The University of Regina flag was raised at a ceremony outside City Hall today in honour of the special day.

"A century ago, a group of forward thinking people wanted to make a difference. From their dreams grew a small Methodist high school with 27 students in its first year," said University Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Thomas Chase. "That small high school has grown into today's University of Regina, a world-class institution with nearly 13,000 students from close to 60 countries around the world. Today is a day to reflect on the past and embrace the future."

"University of Regina Day" is a culmination of a year-long celebration of the University's Centennial. Events have included a Founders' Dinner, the President's Centennial Gala, an Alumni Homecoming, and a celebration of the University of Regina's 30-year relationship with China.

Yesterday, University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons launched a new book entitled Honouring our Past, Embracing our Future: A Century of Excellence in Education at the University of Regina Campus. The book, produced by the Canadian Plains Research Center (CPRC), chronicles the history of the University.
