Paul J. Hill School of Business students finish strong in Inter-Collegiate Business Competition
News Release Release Date: January 9, 2012 3:00 p.m.
Teams from the Paul J. Hill School of Business excelled again in the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) held at Queens University, in Kingston Ontario on January 5th to 7th, with the human resources and business policy teams finishing first and second, respectively. This is the second year in a row that a team from the U of R has finished first overall.
“We knew we were competing with larger business schools so hearing our University's name announced during the awards ceremony was a highlight of our academic careers!” said U of R team member, Dayle Diekrager. Shayne Barrie added that the experience makes him proud to be part of the University of Regina.
“Preparing to participate in this competition takes a great deal of time for our students,” said Sean Tucker, Assistant Professor in Human Resource Management, Business Administration. “They have all shown such dedication over the last few months that it is wonderful to see them achieve such a positive outcome.”
Now in its 34th year, the ICBC is Canada’s premiere undergraduate business case competition. Students can compete in Accounting, Business Policy, Ethics, Debate, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Management of Information Systems.
In all, teams from 38 universities from Canada and abroad entered this year’s competition. Each team was required to submit a written case analysis in the fall of 2011. Based on the quality of these analyses, the judges selected the top six teams to enter the final round in each category. Teams from the University of Regina made it to the final round in four categories (Business Policy, Debate, Human Resources and Marketing) which allowed nine students from the Paul J. Hill School of Business to participate in the finals: Dayle Diekrager, Laura Poure, Jeremy Barber, Greg Moore, Kyle Derrick, Shannon Johnson, Andrew Polasek, Shayne Barrie and Taylor Carson. The teams are grateful for the sponsorship of Direct West and CMA Canada (Saskatchewan).
“These talented students have demonstrated once again that they can compete with the best in the country,” says Morina Rennie, Dean of Business Administration at the U of R.
Final competition results saw the University of Regina place first in the Human Resources category followed by Queensland University of Technology (from Australia) and Concordia University. First place in the Business Policy category went to Queensland University of Technology followed by the University of Regina and Concordia University.
