News Release Release Date: April 23, 2012 12:00 p.m.

The University of Regina today announced a new agreement with North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) in Beijing, China, to establish the China-Canada Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability Research (China-Canada IEESR). Through this partnership, the two Universities will work together to establish joint research programs, faculty and student exchanges in the fields of energy, environment, climate change and social adaptation, and pollution reduction for power industries.

“This new agreement will build on the University of Regina’s long-standing strategic relationship with NCEPU, opening the door to future collaborations,” said Dennis Fitzpatrick, Vice-President of Research at the University of Regina. “By working together and combining our expertise at both universities, the new Institute is in a unique position to undertake research and demonstration projects to meet local and global clean energy needs.”

NCEPU is the major university in the People’s Republic of China for research and development in power production.

The China-Canada IEESR will have a physical presence in Beijing and Regina.  IEESR will house two research centres: the Research Centre for Social Responsibility, Climate Change, and Adaptation and the Research Centre for Energy Sustainability and Pollution Reduction for Power Industries.

The activities of the two centres will provide much timely research in energy and environmental studies as it relates to social responsibility, climate change and adaptation. The research outcomes of the centres will be shared with industry and government in both China and Saskatchewan.

Collaborative projects are already in the works as a result of this agreement such as a joint partnership between the two universities and the University of Texas at Austin in the upcoming conference “Storm Warning: Water, Energy and Climate Security in a Changing World”, which will be held in Banff, AB, in October 2012. As well the University of Regina and NCEPU have developed a new program called the Shen Kuo Student Exchange Program. Twelve Chinese graduate students from Engineering and Environmental Sciences at the University of Regina will present their research findings at NCEPU on June 9, 2012.
