News Release Release Date: September 5, 2012 2:00 p.m.
The University of Regina today announced it has set a new enrolment record, with 13,119 students enrolled at the
University for the Fall 2012 semester. That compares to 12,797 at the same time last year. The University is also
reporting a 10 per cent increase in the number of first-year student admissions. As of August 30, the University
admitted 3,850 first-year students, up from 3,509 at the same time last year. Courses offered through Flexible
Learning at the University are also on the rise. There are a total of 2,634 off campus enrolments this year compared
to 2,022 at the same time last year.
“We are very encouraged by this year’s enrolment,” said University of Regina President and
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons. “Our record student numbers reaffirm that we are providing high quality,
accessible education that is meeting the needs of our students – students who are joining us from across
Saskatchewan, all regions of Canada, and around the globe.”
Demand is particularly strong in the Faculties of Nursing, Kinesiology and Health Studies, and Science. In only its
second year as an academic unit, for example, the Faculty of Nursing has seen the largest increase in first-year
admissions, with an increase of 66 per cent. The program was launched last year in partnership with the Saskatchewan
Institute of Applied Science and Technology, and leads to a Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing
(SCBScN) degree.
The faculties with the next highest admission rates are the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies and the Faculty
of Science, which have seen increases of 30 per cent and 29 per cent, respectively.
“Our domestic and international enrolments are a further indication that the University of Regina has come of
age,” Timmons said. “As Saskatchewan continues to grow, I am confident that University of Regina
graduates will make an ever-widening impact on our province’s development.”
