News Release Release Date: August 29, 2013 10:25 a.m.

Events and activities are planned for next week to help new and returning students at the University of Regina get ready for another academic year.

This year, various campus organizations – UR International, the Students’ Union, the Student Success Centre, and the federated colleges, Campion, First Nations University of Canada and Luther – have joined forces for Welcome Week activities.

“The emphasis for this week is less on academics and rules, and more on having fun and creating a sense of belonging for the students,” explains Naomi Deren, Manager of the Student Success Centre and chairperson of Welcome Week.

Tuesday, Sept. 3, is Orientation Day, where students can find out more about the layout of the campus, meet professors, visit faculties, meet other students and attend workshops.

Classes begin on Wednesday, Sept. 4 – and there will be plenty of other activities that day, including a Student Club Fair, a free student barbeque, and a Decentralized Dance Party, in which music will be broadcast throughout campus and all students need is a boom box with an FM receiver. At UR International’s Global Showcase the various cultures at the University of Regina will be celebrated. There will be international entertainment, display booths and a buffet in the Main Gym of the Kinesiology Building from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Among the activities on Thursday, Sept. 5, will be a United Way Charity barbeque and a concert on the Greens

Friday, Sept. 6 features a volleyball tournament, a Rams game at Mosaic Stadium, and Movie Night on the Greens.

Welcome Week gives students a better understanding of the campus, meet other students, and lay the foundation for a successful academic year.
