Enrolment increases at University of Regina

News Release Release Date: January 8, 2014 9:00 a.m.

Today marks the first day of classes of the University of Regina’s 2014 Winter semester. Preliminary figures indicate a 4.1 per cent increase in enrolments with close to 500 more students registered from this time last year.

The biggest percentage increase is in the number of graduate students. The 1,599 students registered represents a 5.8 per cent increase from the 1,512 graduate students registered one year ago.

The number of undergraduate students is also on the rise. This semester 10,969 undergraduate students are registered, up 3.8 per cent from the 10,564 registered last year.

Overall enrolment at the University of Regina has been on an upward trend for five years. The increases can be attributed to more outreach activities across Saskatchewan and the country, and implementation of recruitment strategies aimed at Aboriginal and international students.

“This increase continues to illustrate that the University of Regina’s programs are meeting the demands of students from across our province, throughout Canada and around the world,” said University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons.

“The increase in graduate students is especially rewarding. When choosing a post-secondary institution, graduate level students tend to look at the strength of the faculty and research enterprise. These numbers speak to the high quality of teaching and the world-class research being conducted at our University,” she added.
