When students arrive at the University of Regina, they are faced with one of the most important choices of their lives: what should they study?

In today’s society where our lives and careers are being transformed at a record pace, the University of Regina’s latest campaign is encouraging students to “think big and choose the Arts”.

The social sciences and humanities touch upon the most valuable aspects of the human experience. Pursuing an Arts degree, or ensuring your degree has a strong Arts component, can help you make informed decisions about critical issues that can affect you; issues like climate change, future health care policies, human rights and our economy.

Senior Policy Fellow at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy Dale Eisler (BA’70) agrees. He notes, “My Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the U of R opened my mind to the world, teaching me to think about issues and events in a way that has guided me to this day.”

Courses in the social sciences and humanities also develop your leadership skills by helping you to stay curious, challenge the status quo and learn to think outside the box.  It’s no surprise that many of the leaders in our province, like Mayor Michael Fougere, Madam Justice Georgina R. Jackson, Premier Brad Wall and Wascana MP Ralph Goodale all have Arts degrees.

The University of Regina has always placed a strong focus on the social sciences and humanities for two important reasons — so its graduates could solve problems and change the world for the better — reasons that are more important today than ever. They are the reasons why you should think big and choose the Arts.
