Berkley Jo Petersen has been a student at the University of Regina for just a few weeks but she can already tell the next four years will be great.

“I can see myself expanding my roots at the University of Regina by getting involved in volunteer opportunities and meeting lots of new people,” says the first-year Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies student.

Petersen is already signed up for intramural volleyball, and enrolled in the UR Guarantee program – a program designed to support students through every step of the university experience to successful employment.

Upon coming to university this fall, Petersen was one of 40 students to receive the University of Regina 40th Celebration Award, valued at $1,000. To apply, she submitted a short essay outlining her goals for the next 40 years and how a University of Regina education supports achieving those goals.

The University created this new scholarship to celebrate its 40th year as an autonomous, degree-granting institution.

In addition to this scholarship, Petersen was one of the two recipients for the Saskatchewan Physical Education Association Award, and the recipient of the Don Powel Award from the University of Regina. She also received the Centennial Merit Plus scholarship from the University of Regina.

“Scholarships have been extremely important to me this year,” says Petersen. “They have helped me financially pay for the first year of tuition, and have also helped me reflect on all my accomplishments these last couple years.”

Petersen, who is originally from Mossbank, SK, says she wants to encourage incoming students to look for opportunities to support their post-secondary education.

“I want everyone to know that it is rather easy to find and apply for scholarships, if you have a couple hours, take the time to do so.”
