Student Derek Dawson did not have to go far to find an Engineering program that suited him.Dawson is a third year student in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, majoring in Industrial Systems Engineering at the University of Regina. Derek was born and raised in Regina, graduating from Dr. Martin LeBoldus Catholic High School prior to attending the University. Dawson is also in the Co-op program which places students in paid positions as they complete their studies. He is now on his second work term and currently employed at Enbridge Pipelines in Regina.

Q: Why did you choose the U of R engineering program?

A: Once I decided I was interested in going into Engineering I checked into a number of university engineering programs. Several of my friends recommended the U of R engineering program  and were very positive about their experiences here so I decided the U of R would be the most cost effective and relevant choice for me.

Q: Has the engineering program met your expectations?

A: Yes, I’m very satisfied with the program and I’ve enjoyed most of the classes I’ve taken. I would say my overall experience has been very good and the engineering program itself is quite strong.

Q: What are your impressions of the U of R generally?

A: It’s great. There’s lots of opportunity to get involved. It’s a very interactive campus and I feel I fit in really well. The faculties put on a lot of great events and there are a lot of group activities.

Q: This is your second Co-op work term.  What has your experience in the Co-Op program been like?

A: The Co-op program has been a very positive experience for me. The Co-op people were helpful in providing information and explaining everything required to be successful. I’ve been lucky to get two great work placements that are directly related to my program. They’ve allowed me to work in areas that I’m interested in. I have nothing but good things to say about the Co-op program.

Q: You’ve been on the Dean’s list for the last 4 semesters. What’s the key to your success?

A: I’ve always been very focused and disciplined in work and at school, which helps because the workload is very high in engineering. Getting the work done on time and going to class is really important as it helps when you’re reviewing for exams to have that prior understanding of the subject.

Q: Any tips for future engineering students?

A: Be focused and disciplined. Get the work done on time and going to class is very important because of the high workload.
Even if you’re not outgoing try to get involved with other students in your classes. We’re all going through the same things and we help each other to succeed and understand the material we’re studying.

Also try to take everything in stride and keep your eye on the prize. Don’t get hung up on one poor class or one bad mark.

The University of Regina’s 2015-2020 Strategic Plan has identified student success as one of its three strategic priorities and the Co-op work program supports this by providing students with opportunities to gain practical work experience in their field.
