Shumiatcher Art Collection at MacKenzie Art Gallery

The University of Regina and the MacKenzie Art Gallery will be exhibiting some art from the Shumiatcher Art Collection.
The exhibit – “Love at First Sight: The Drs. Morris and Jacqui Shumiatcher Art Collection” – will include 170 key works of art from a donation announced in September 2014 by Dr. Jacqui Shumiatcher of more than 1,000 artworks to the University of Regina.
The opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. at the MacKenzie Art Gallery at 2475 Albert St. in Regina. The reception is open to the public, and there is no charge.
“It’s great to see this representation of the whole collection on display, as I always have found that when shown in an exhibition the art seems to have a different life in a different location or different life in a different world,” says Jacqui Shumiatcher.
The title for the exhibit comes from when the late Regina lawyer Dr. Morris Shumiatcher bought his first Inuit sculpture in 1954 at the Hudson’s Bay store in La Ronge, SK., and described it as “a case of love at first sight.”
“I am very much looking forward to seeing the exhibition and seeing the look on the faces of those who attend as they get to enjoy the art as Morris and I have,” Shumiatcher says.
Morris and Jacqui have been community builders, social justice advocates and patrons of the arts in Saskatchewan for decades.
The Shumiatchers have made extensive contributions to the University of Regina over the years. These include the establishment of the Shu-Box Theatre, as well as the Dr. Morris Shumiatcher Graduate Scholarship in English and the Rose Jeanne Souillart Clay and Pierre P. F. Clay Scholarship in French. In 2013, Jacqui also contributed $250,000 to The College Avenue Campus Renewal Project. She was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Regina in 2002.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. exhibition curators Alex King, the Curator of the University of Regina President’s Art Collection, and Timothy Long will provide a tour of “Love at First Sight.” The exhibit continues until January 3, 2016.
