In celebration of 40 years as an independent institution the University of Regina is launching a new award for students – the University of Regina 40th Celebration Award.

“We’re offering 40 awards worth $1,000 each – a total of $40,000 – to new students who will start their first year courses in the fall,” said University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons.

“This is a great opportunity for the University to celebrate its past and to help build a bright future for our community, by supporting the leaders of tomorrow – our students”.

To apply, students need to write a short essay outlining their goals for the next 40 years and describing how a University of Regina education will support the achievement of those goals.

“I hope that our incoming students take advantage of this opportunity to think about what their future holds and what role post-secondary education might play in shaping their lives,” said Timmons.

On July 1, 1974, the University of Regina became an autonomous, degree-granting institution with its own Chancellor, Board of Governors, Senate, Convocation, and Council, and adopted the motto “As One Who Serves.”

Forty years later, the University is celebrating the milestone by hosting a number of events for faculty, staff and alumni, celebrating the 40th Spring Convocation in June, as well as launching the University of Regina 40th Celebration Award.

Since its independence, the University of Regina has grown to become a diverse, comprehensive University, dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and public service. Today, it is home to 10 faculties and 25 academic departments, and is widely recognized for innovative programs, a welcoming campus environment and a strong commitment to faculty and student research.
