University of Regina holding events to increase awareness about violence in our communities

The University of Regina is addressing the sensitive topic of violence with a series of events from October 27-31, 2014, as part of the Man Up Against Violence Project.

According to Statistics Canada, the rate of violence against women in Saskatchewan is almost double the national average. Saskatchewan leads the country in rates of intimate partner violence and sexual offences, and in rates of violence against girls and female teenagers.

Among the events:

• Monday, Oct. 27, 1:30-3:30 p.m., a social in CKHS 166
• Tuesday, Oct. 28, noon to 1:00 p.m., a panel discussion on gendered violence, Crush Area, Research and Innovation Centre
• Wednesday, Oct. 29, noon to 1:00 p.m., a workshop presentation “Healthy Masculinity: What does it look like?”
• Wednesday, Oct. 29, 4:30-5:45 p.m., movie: “Tough Guise 2: Violence, Manhood and American Culture”, Campion College Auditorium
• Thursday, Oct. 30, 4:00-6:00 p.m., Dr. Jackson Katz, keynote speaker, educator, author on violence, media and masculinity, Gymnasium 3, CKHS
• Friday, Oct. 31, noon to 5:00 p.m. wrap-up event, location TBA
