The University of Regina’s Board of Governors is honouring Dr. George Maslany by presenting him with the University’s Distinguished Service Award at a ceremony on December 8.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have: rendered outstanding service to the University; served the community for many years; and significantly enhanced the development and/or operations of one or more of the University’s areas of endeavor. The nomination must also be strongly supported within the University community.

“I am most appreciative of and humbled by the Board of Governors selecting me for this prestigious award. Receiving this recognition from the University of Regina, where I spent most of my career, is one of the most significant highlights of my life,” says Dr. Maslany.

“More importantly, I want to thank the University of Regina for initially hiring me as a faculty member, and then providing me with the opportunity to serve this institution in various challenging and exciting roles. This university provided me with a professional career beyond my dreams,” he adds.

University of Regina President Dr. Vianne Timmons is pleased to honour Dr. Maslany.

“For more than four decades, Dr. Maslany has served our University as what I would call an ‘academic triple threat’ – a teacher and supervisor of students, a distinguished researcher, and a skilled and dedicated administrator,” says President Timmons.

Board of Governors Chair Lee Elliott says “Dr. Maslany’s longstanding commitment to our University and the larger community perfectly embodies our University’s motto – “As One Who Serves” – and makes him a fitting recipient of this award.”

Since the awards began in 1983, only 13 members of the University community have been recognized for their service. They include: Jim Ayre [1983], Cliff Blight [1984], D. T. Lowery [posthumously in 1986], Don Irwin [1988],  Dorothy Pogany [1990], Jack Boan [2006], William J. Howard [2007], R. James Tomkins [2008], Donald Lee [2009], Mo Bundon [2010], Andy Glavacevic [posthumously in 2012], and Harvey Mazinke and Michael Tymchak [2013].
