University of Regina enrolment continues to grow

University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons today announced that enrolment for the Fall 2015 semester is anticipated to exceed last year’s record with more than 14,300 students currently registered for classes.

Final enrolment numbers are yet to come; however, as of September 8, 2015, registrations in degree programs or degree-eligible credit courses are up by approximately four per cent (over 550 students) for the same time period last year.  This will be the seventh consecutive year of increased enrolment at the University.

“This amazing growth demonstrates that students from Saskatchewan and around the world recognize the value of a University of Regina education more than ever before,” says Timmons. “The University’s new strategic plan identifies student success as one of our three strategic priorities, and that commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for our students – together with our renewed efforts at recruitment and retention – will make a difference for thousands of young people and their families in Saskatchewan.”

Some of the initiatives that are supporting increased enrolment include:

• Significant increases to student financial assistance with help from new provincial government programs. The operating budget for scholarships has nearly doubled from 2009-10 to 2014-15 from $3.7 million to $7.6 million. Among 14 comprehensive Canadian universities, the University of Regina ranks second highest in total financial aid to students as a percentage of tuition revenue (33% in 2013-14).
• A growing number of experiential and international learning opportunities: more than $10 million was earned by students in co-operative education work placements in 2014 and more than 800 domestic students studied abroad over the past four years.
• The success of Aboriginal students on campuses has been supported through the expansion of the Aboriginal Student Centre, the establishment of the Aboriginal Advisory Circle and the establishment of a base-funded Executive Lead for Indigenization position.
