Students give back with the first annual rake-a-thon

Throughout the past month, U of R students have been busy in the community “raking” in money for the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The UR Guarantee program, together with University of Regina Alumni Relations, started a new fundraiser in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Over the course of five days in October, teams of U of R students donated their time and muscles to rake the yards of dozens of U of R Alumni.

In exchange for the students’ efforts, U of R alumni generously made cash donations. These efforts resulted in the raising of over $3,500 with all proceeds going towards funding a wish for a child with a life threatening illness who lives in Saskatchewan.

“The Alumni Relations office received many positive comments from alumni who took advantage of the fall rake-a-thon,” says Diane Mullan, Acting Manager of Alumni Relations. “Not only did they appreciate having students help them out with fall clean up, they commented on student friendliness and professionalism. Alumni were so impressed that the students were selflessly raising money for the Children's Wish Foundation. This was a clear example of students embracing the University motto ‘As one who serves’.”

Don Millard (1974 alumnus) was pleased to contribute to the fundraising effort and also shared some insight on the event.

“In addition to raising funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation, it’s the kind of initiative that encourages random acts of kindness, something we should all be practicing,” says Millard.

The UR Guarantee program is appreciative of all the support this new fundraiser received, both from the community and the student volunteers.

Throughout the rake-a-thon, students and alumni connected with one another, students were able to enjoy a healthy study break from midterms, the City of Regina’s Leaf and Yard Waste program was promoted through the use of donated paper bags and promotional flyers - and funds were raised for the Children’s Wish Foundation.
