News Release Release Date: May 18, 2016 11:15 a.m.

Today the University of Regina welcomes a delegation from Mexico including Dr. Lorena Alvarado, national academic director of polytechnic and technological universities in Mexico, in addition to six presidents of various Mexican universities.

The delegation is in Regina from May 18-20 to meet with various stakeholders, including the University of Regina, and to further collaborate on educational and research partnerships.

Currently, the University of Regina has 34 active partnerships with 25 institutions in Mexico.

“These long-standing partnerships serve to strengthen our academic and research enterprises, and help create opportunities for our students, faculty and staff to gain valuable international experience,” said President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Regina, Dr. Vianne Timmons. “I’m excited to welcome Dr. Alvarado and her delegation to our campus.”

The University of Regina’s fall enrolment statistics indicated nearly 2,000 students – 13.7 per cent of the total student population – are international. This is an increase of 8.5 per cent over last year and a 90.8 per cent increase since 2010.

“International education is vital to our province and our economy,” Advanced Education Minister Scott Moe said. “Our institutions are economic drivers. Having a student population with the opportunity to gain new perspectives and embrace the diversity that international students bring challenges us all to do better. These are some of the best ambassadors for Saskatchewan we could hope to have. This is part of what keeps Saskatchewan strong”.
