Through generous grants from the Derril McLeod Family Foundation held at the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, the University of Regina has received more than $241,000 toward the College Avenue Campus Renewal Project.

“As our founding Board Chair, Dr. Derril McLeod was instrumental in leading the way for our University to become an autonomous institution in 1974,” said University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons. “He was a true believer in education, and someone who showed immense foresight and leadership at a critical time in the history of our University.  We are so grateful for his many and lasting contributions.”

The family of the late Dr. McLeod is being recognized for its ongoing support of the University of Regina, which now extends to three generations. Dr. McLeod established the Derrill McLeod Family Foundation at the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation in order to ensure a lasting legacy in our community. The McLeod children provide advice each year on grants made from the fund.

“The funds committed from the Derril McLeod Family Foundation to the College Avenue Campus Renewal Project will help ensure that our students and community will be able to continue to access the programs which are offered at our historic College Avenue campus,” added President Timmons.
McLeod graduated with a degree in Law from the University of Saskatchewan in 1946 and went on to a distinguished legal career in Regina. He became the first Chair of the University of Regina’s Board of Governors, and was held in such high regard that he was later elected Chancellor. He held that position from 1983-89. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree. McLeod passed away in 2007 at the age of 83.

To date, the Derril McLeod Family Foundation at the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation has contributed more than $341,000 to the University of Regina. In 2009, the Foundation established the Dr. Derril McLeod Environmental Systems Scholarship, which so far has assisted six Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science students.

The South Saskatchewan Community Foundation is a community partner to the University of Regina providing grants to a number of programs and priorities at the University. More information is available at www.sscf.ca
