Awards for Engineering and Geology excellence

Two U of R professors are among those honoured recently for excellence in research, teaching and outreach.
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) - the regulatory body for professional engineers and geoscientists - held its annual awards night.
Dr.David deMontigny, Associate Dean (Academic) and associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, received the Environmental Excellence Award.
The award recognizes exceptional achievements by an individual or a team related to environmental protection and preservation.
As a researcher with the Clean Energy Technologies Institute, deMontigny helps coordinate CO2 capture and clean energy activities for the U of R. He’s published numerous papers on carbon capture technology in peer reviewed journals.

“David has a long history of contributing to environmental and community issues,” says APEGS, which has also awarded deMontigny the Fellow of Engineers Canada designation.
Dr. Janis Dale, associate professor in the Department of Geology, has received the Fellow of Geoscientists Canada designation.
The designation is given in honour of Dale’s exceptional contributions to the geoscience profession in Canada.
Among her numerous accomplishments, Dale was instrumental in bringing an accredited Environmental Geoscience Program to the Departments of Geology and Geography at the U of R.
She also contributed to the course requirements needed for professional registration. In 2015, Dale was also honoured with an Award for Excellence in Teaching by the University of Regina Alumni Association.
Benjamin Freitag has received the Friend of the Profession Award. Starting in 2009, Freitag was coordinator of the U of R’s Educating Young in Engineering and Science program (EYES).
“Ben led a team to create youth programs to spark curiosity and learning in the fields of science, engineering and technology,” says APEGS.
Freiteg is also praised for engaging under-represented youth and targeting lower income neighbourhoods through the EYES program. Freiteg earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics and Bachelor of Education at the U of R. He’s currently completing a Masters of Education.
APEGS has also recognized the immense contributions from a former U of R professor.
Klaus Ottenbreit received the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Ottenbreit was a lab instructor in the Engineering Faculty starting in 1979. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Information Systems Technology while working full time.
In announcing the awards APEGS stated that Ottenbreit “pioneered many of the lab and lab performance standards in the Electronic Systems Engineering program. He estimates he taught well over 1,000 students during his 22 year tenure.”
Ottenbreit received the U of R’s Inspired Teaching Award in 1999. In 2001, he accepted a technology position at SaskTel. He recently moved into a strategic planning role in marketing with SaskTel.
The awards were handed out at APEG’s annual banquet in Saskatoon April 30, 2016.
