News Release Release Date: January 16, 2017 4:20 p.m.

The Paul J. Hill School of Business students’ hard work and preparation for the JDC West Case Competition has paid off again. The competition was held in Edmonton on January 13 -15, 2017, with a theme of “Empower New Beginnings”.

Business students from 12 of western Canada’s top universities travelled to the University of Alberta to compete in the 2017 JDC West business case competition. The Paul J. Hill School of Business team was awarded “School of the Year”. The Hill team also placed first in the categories of Social, Participation, Volunteer Hours, Finance, and International Business. The Executive of the Year award was also awarded by the two co-captains of the Hill Team, Cari-Lynn Schoettler and Danielle Lane. This award is based on strong leadership, selflessness, and to those who portray qualities of true JDC West spirit.

The Hill team has now placed in the top three as School of the Year nine times in the 12-year history of the competition, more than any other school.

The University of Regina team placed second in Marketing and Debate, and third in Accounting and Athletics.

The Hill JDC West team also logged a total of 3,377 volunteer hours, and raised close to $25,500 for Hopes Home Charity.

“I am very proud to say our Hill team won School of the Year,” said Dr. Andrew Gaudes, Dean of the Hill and Levene Schools of Business at the University of Regina. “The team, under the coaching leadership of Randy Linton, represented the Hill School and the University of Regina very well. They performed at the highest order of conduct, which impressed all the deans who were present for the Western Canadian Federation of Business School Deans meetings.”

JDC West is a student-run competition providing opportunities for business students in western Canada to achieve excellence in academics, social responsibility, sporting, and social competitions. Next year’s competition will be held at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, with the theme “Embracing Diversity.”
