Award of Distinction for Associate VP - International

There’s a big international honour for a University of Regina executive.
Livia Castellanos, Associate Vice-President (International), has been awarded the 2017 Award of Distinction by the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (CONAHEC).
Castellanos was acknowledged for her exemplary leadership in building a bridge of understanding across the borders of Canada, Mexico, the United States and beyond and in celebrating diverse educational systems. The award also recognizes Castellanos’ outstanding contributions that she has made in advancing the collaborative academic agenda in North America in striving to share educational resources and learn from one another.
The award was presented by Dr. David Atkinson, President of McEwan University and chair of the board of CONAHEC. The organization held its 18th North American Higher Education Conference at the U of R June 14 – 15, attracting educators from across North America as well as Brazil, Cuba, India, Germany, Korea and the Netherlands. The conference theme was Purposeful Internationalization.
Under Castellanos’ leadership the University of Regina has truly internationalized the campus. Enrolment of international students has grown significantly. Around 2,000 international students from more than 60 countries now study at the U of R, making up about 14 per cent of the student population. As well, more than 500 students study abroad every academic year.
Castellanos joins some distinguished educators who have received the CONAHEC Award of Distinction.
They include:
- Robert A. Pastor, Professor of International Relations, Founding Director of the Center for North American Studies, American University & author of numerous books on North America including "The North American Idea" (2011)
- Francisco Marmolejo, Tertiary Education Coordinator, Education Human Development Network, The World Bank (2013)
- Sergio Alcocer, Undersecretary for North American Affairs, Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Mexico (2014)
- Fernando León García, President, CETYS Universiad (2016)
