Professor inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering

For the third year in a row, a professor from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has been inducted as a new Fellow in the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Christine Chan, Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Energy and Environmental Informatics, is one of 52 Fellows from across Canada to receive the honour. A ceremony was held in Ottawa June 26, 2017, at the Canadian Academy of Engineering’s annual meeting. Chan has become the first female Fellow of the Academy at the University of Regina.
“We welcome the new Fellows, who are all engineers of outstanding abilities,” says Dr. Douglas Ruth, President of The Canadian Academy of Engineering. “While they have widely varying backgrounds, what they have in common is the demonstrated ability to go beyond the normal practice of engineering and contribute in exemplary ways towards their fields and to their communities.”
The Academy praised Chan for her “major contributions to the education of engineers and research in information technology and applied artificial intelligence. She is an international researcher who has done pioneering work in engineering applications of artificial intelligence.”
The Canadian Academy of Engineering is an independent, self-governing and non-profit organization established in 1987. The Academy is a national institution through which Canada’s most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada.
According to the Academy, Fellows are committed to “ensuring that Canada’s engineering expertise is applied to the benefit of all Canadians.”
In joining this impressive list of fellow engineers, the Canadian Academy of Engineering also praised Chan for being a “dedicated teacher who has taught and supervised over 100 HQP (Highly Qualified Personnel), including bachelors, masters and doctoral students, who have continued to build successful careers in the information technology industry in Canada and abroad.”
In 2016, the U of R's Dr. Paitoon (P.T.) Tontiwachwuthikul was inducted as a Fellow. In 2015, Dr. Gordon Huang, also of the U of R, received the same honour.
