Street names and civic addresses will be added to building signs (top image) and street signs (bottom image) will be installed on campus this fall to improve wayfinding.

With new street names and civic addresses, the University of Regina main campus will soon be “on the map” more than ever before! Naming the streets and adding civic addresses to buildings will make it easier to locate buildings and navigate around our 270 acres. The streets and addresses are in addition to nearly 100 signs installed as part of the University’s wayfinding initiative.

The University’s master plan called for such navigational improvements, and through the wayfinding project, the University is taking the opportunity to further Indigenize the campus.

Of the eight street names, four names are in Cree, Michif, Nakoda and Saulteaux, the languages historically spoken on Treaty 4 and 6 lands and the traditional homelands of the Métis. English and French are used for other names, reflecting Canada’s two official languages.

President Vianne Timmons is happy with the final stage of the wayfinding project. “We want our campus to be welcoming, and not a challenge for students, visitors and emergency service providers to navigate,” says Timmons. “Having the street names represent plants that have traditionally been important to Indigenous peoples extends our effort to make campus reflective of our shared heritage as well.”

Sign installation is scheduled for completion in fall 2017. Civic addresses will be assigned to buildings in the coming months.
