Abstract:
Manganese removal is often required to meet drinking water standards. Conventional practices involve chemical oxidation; however, biological removal is a viable alternative. In preliminary experiments, Variovorax bacteria was shown effective for reducing manganese concentrations to below detection levels. Trickling filters seeded with Variovorax offer an inexpensive and sustainable solution for removing chemically-recalcitrant manganese in surface water.
