Abstract

The Woodrow Lloyd lecture is presented annually by the Faculty of Arts to recognize the outstanding contributions of former Saskatchewan Premier Woodrow Lloyd to the fields of education and social welfare. This year’s lecture, The Hedgehog, the Fox, and Canadian Austerity, presented by University of New Brunswick Political Science professor Thomas Workman, will explore how Canadian history has been shaped by international economic crises from the middle of the 19th century to the present. According to Workman the global crisis of the early 1970s ushered in neoliberal policy reforms to the detriment of working people across Canada and that the lingering crisis of 2008 — the Great Recession — will add immensely to their burdens.
