Abstract

The Shu-Box Theatre will be packed with young school children this week, to watch the modern-day classic play, “New Canadian Kid.” The show will be performed by students from the class, Theatre for Young Audiences (315AC), June 17 – 19. Some performances are already sold out. “New Canadian Kid” is written by Dennis Foon. It’s the story of Nick, a young boy from an imaginary country called Homeland, who moves to Canada with his family. Nick is forced to deal with a new culture and language as well as hostile classmates. “The really clever thing about it is Dennis Foon has all of the Canadians speaking gibberish, which you come to understand. So the Homelander, who is the foreigner, is the one speaking English,” says Kathyrn Bracht, Associate Professor in the Theatre Department who is also overseeing this production. “The play cleverly addresses differences, tolerance and racism.”
