It was every curler's dream: draw to the button with the last rock in an extra end to win the game and take the gold. That's what skip Brooklyn Lemon had to do to win the game for the U of R Women's team at the CIS/CCA University Curling Championship, and that's what she did.

"It was a great way to win," says Lemon, "especially since St. Mary's (their opponent in the final) had beaten us earlier in the round-robin."

That earlier loss was the only one for the foursome, which also includes third Chelsey Peterson, second Ashley Green, lead Nicole Lang and alternate Sarah Watamanuk. They defeated Wilfrid Laurier 11-5 in the semi-final before grabbing the gold in the final.

Team coach Jackie Downer says there was "an eerie silence" in Edmonton's Saville Centre when Lemon let the winning rock go, and then screaming and yelling as the sweepers went to work and the stone came to rest on the button. It was a déjà vu moment, but with a better ending, for Downer. She was in the same situation a few years ago, but her team was on the losing end of that last rock score.

"This was an awesome accomplishment," says Downer. "I feel lucky just to be with this team."

Winning gold means the season doesn't end for the U of R foursome. Along with the medals the team gets to work with a trainer provided by the Canadian Curling Association for the next nine months, in preparation for representing Canada at the 2011 FISU World Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey, next January.

"This is a great opportunity for us to work with the best on our technique and our strategy," Lemon says. "We were extremely excited when we heard we'd have a trainer to help us. This is something that will benefit our entire careers."

The U of R Men's team completed the round-robin in 4th place at 3-3. The team includes skip Brennen Jones, third Garrett Vey, second Matt Lang, lead Brad Wallin and alternate Kelly Knapp. The men's team is coached by Kay Montgomery.
