The University of Regina holds a special place in the heart of Professor Yan Chao. A former visiting scholar and the proud parent of a third-year Faculty of Business Administration student, Professor Yan, an artist from Xiamen University of Technology in China, unveiled a special art exhibit at the University of Regina on October 4.

Professor Yan specializes in landscape painting and calligraphy, and paints the mountains and rivers of the Fujian province in China. His works have been exhibited across China and internationally. He has been featured in many publications about Chinese painting and art. His works compile part of the exhibit that also features work by an artist at Xiamen University of Technology and an artist at Fuzhou University in China.

The Faculty of Fine Arts is hosting the exhibition which is part of the University's celebration of the 30th anniversary of its formal relationship with China.

"This exhibition celebrates the relationship between the Faculty of Fine Arts and Xiamen University of Technology," says Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dr. Sheila Petty. "We are honoured to have Professor Yan Chao with us during this celebration."

After the introduction of China's Open Door policy the University of Regina became one of the first universities in Canada to develop formal partnerships with Chinese universities and has since developed relationships with more than 50 Chinese institutions. More than 25 delegates from China are in Regina to mark the occasion this week, which included opening ceremonies and the official opening of the Confucius Institute, which was co-established with Hunan University and will offer a cooperatively designed teaching program that delivers academic instruction in the areas of Chinese language, history, cultural diversity, artistic traditions and business practices.

The special art exhibition is on display for a limited time. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Friday, October 7 in the Global Learning Centre, room 115, College West Building at the University's main campus.
