Like every other September first-year students are starting an exciting stage in their lives, and with this stage come new challenges.   Dustin Briltz, a second year student majoring in Psychology, understands what it’s like to be a new student: “I wanted to get really good grades right off the bat.  I was trying to memorize everything instead of trying to understand what I was learning.”  As a new student you need to realize you are not alone.  There are many support services on campus.

Here are some of the places Dustin found support:

UR Guarantee Program
Dustin joined the UR Guarantee Program because he wanted to get involved in volunteer opportunities and the program motivated him to do this:“I like that the program is based on my own goals and that I can work on the requirements in my own time. The world is competitive and so the UR Guarantee Program is helping me build my resume. I feel I’ve been able to grow as a person.”

Professors
Dustin suggests that students get to know their professors.  When coming from high school students will find that their workload is heavier.  It’s up to you to take responsibility for your success as nobody will be “holding your hand.” However, when you reach out to your professors you will find that they are very supportive.  Dustin found a mentor in his English instructor, Scott J. Wilson, who is also the new coordinator of the Writing Centre.  Dustin regularly seeks advice from Scott, “I respect and trust him,”  says Briltz.

Writing Centre
Dustin has some advice for students struggling with writing: “As my English instructor explained, like anything else writing essays is a process and it’s a skill you have to build.”  The tutors at our writing centre can help you build these skills and improve your writing.

Workshops
Dustin believes that students need to build skills such as organization and time management in order to be successful.  The Student Success Centre offers free workshops every week on topics such as study skills, time management, and conquering your first semester.

With the support Dustin receives from his instructors and the UR Guarantee Program he was inspired and took the initiative to propose a workshop to help students:  Motivational Mindset.  He’ll be discussing topics such as meeting with professors, the importance of indentifying your strengths and weaknesses, and how to balance your social life with your academic goals. His workshop will take place Thursday, September 20 at 1:30 in RC 251.21. To register please send an email to student.success@uregina.ca.
