Combining Youth and Computers Results in Unique Summer Camps
A summer camp alternative exists for those with a high-tech bent : Summer Computer Camps at the University of Regina. Three one-week camps will run June 30 to July 17 and are open to youth aged 12 to 17. The camps are operated in a partnership between the University of Regina and Mentor Systems Inc. (MSI), a co-operative of former students.

Instructors for the computer camps are from the information technology industry in Regina, the University of Regina, and the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology. Students will use Windows and Macintosh operating systems, and will focus on topics that include videography, Web site content construction, instant messaging technologies, and 3D mechanical design.

“These camps have been very successful in the past, and we are very pleased with the role the University of Regina will play in this,” said John Quesnel, coordinator of the Computer Camps. “The camps are a fun way for youth to learn about computers and one more way that the University contributes to and extends its expertise into the community.”

The camps start every Monday at 8 a.m. and end at 9 p.m. except for Friday, which ends at 5 p.m. In addition to computer instruction, evenings will include group technical, social and recreational activities, such as laser tag.

Quesnel continued, “The main focus for the camp is networking – not computer systems, but contacts. Students from across Canada and the United States have attended the camps in the past. These Summer Computer Camp students develop friendships that last a lifetime.”

Students who are eager to learn, have the ability to think logically, are self-starters with a sense of humour, thrive on challenge and group interaction, and have a computer background beyond playing games are encouraged to register for the camp.

The cost for one week is $225. Fees include all activities, refreshment breaks and a T-shirt, but do not include other meals or accommodations.

The Summer Computer Camps are part of a larger overall initiative called Mini-University – an umbrella under which many of the great summer youth programs that have been offered for years at the University can be found.
