Spring convocation honours 1,614 students
The University of Regina will present 1,614 students with degrees, diplomas and certificates at its annual spring convocation June 1-3 at the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts. The ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. each day.

On Wednesday, June 1, the ceremonies will feature the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Honorary degrees will be presented to Rev. Stanley Cuthand, an internationally respected teacher, translator and minister, Courtney Milne, an internationally celebrated landscape photographer, and Ann Phillips, a respected senior Regina lawyer and patron of the arts.

On Thursday, June 2, the ceremonies will feature the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Fine Arts, and the Faculty of Science. Honorary degrees will be presented to Frederick W. Hill, an entrepreneur who contributed to his community through faith and service, Edith Wiens, an international concert and operatic performer and a professor of voice, and Gary Hyland, an author, teacher, publisher, and founder of literary organizations.

On Friday, Friday, June 3, the ceremonies will feature the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Social Work, and the Centre for Continuing Education. Honorary degrees will be presented to Jean Okimāsis, one of the foremost Aboriginal language educators in Canada, Joseph Pettick, a pre-eminent architect and contributor to Regina's environment, and Geoffrey Pawson, a founder of social organizations and contributor to the well-being of children and families within and beyond the province.

The total number of degrees, diplomas and certificates is 1,619, being awarded to 996 women and 623 men. Students from 61 countries outside Canada will be presented with degrees, diplomas or certificates. The countries include the Bahamas, Bulgaria, Colombia, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Libya, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, People's Republic of China, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, United Sates, Venezuela and Vietnam.

This is the first convocation for the Faculty of Business Administration, which changed its name from the Faculty of Administration this spring.

The first U of R Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Software Systems Development will be presented this year.

There are six PhD awards this year. They are in education, engineering (two), mathematics, Canadian Plains Studies and psychology.
