Who’s cooking the food system?
What's cooking for dinner is increasingly a function of how the global food trade is structured. Exploring the
relationship between what we eat, where it comes from and who controls the food system evokes key questions about justice,
sustainability and food sovereignty. Nettie Wiebe will deliver the 2006 Stapleford Lecture, “Who’s Cooking the
Food System? Globalization and Food Sovereignty”, on Thurs., Mar. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campion College Auditorium
at the University of Regina. Admission to the lecture is free, and parking is available at no charge in Lot 3 in the
“M” designated areas.
Wiebe has been described as a public intellectual, an agrarian feminist and a social activist. For more than 20 years,
Wiebe has been an active participant in public policy forums across Canada and around the world, speaking on issues such as
sustainable agriculture and rural communities, trade agreements, women's equality, human rights, economic and
environmental issues and food security. Her work has been recognized with the Global Citizen of the Year Award (1994) and
the Distinguished Canadian Award (Council of Canadians, 1999). She currently farms and teaches ethics at St. Andrews
College (University of Saskatchewan).
