Bad hair day for a great cause at U of R
Twelve members of the University of Regina Engineering Students’ Society (RESS) will be having a bad hair day on
March 13 – but none of them are the least bit upset about it. In fact, they have all chosen to lose their locks as
part of the RESS “Head Shave for Cancer” fundraiser in support of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.
The twelve students – as well as one Faculty of Engineering professor – have all placed a dollar value on their
hair, ranging from $100 all the way up to $15,000. At an event to be held at the U of R on March 13, donations to the
Cancer Agency will be added up, and as the team tally reaches each designated level, one student volunteer will have his or
her head shaved.
“I am really hoping to reach the $15,000,” says Ariele Chow, VP Special Projects for the RESS. “It is
said that everyone, at some point in their lives, will know someone diagnosed with cancer.”
Should the tally reach $15,000, Faculty of Engineering professor David deMontigny will also have a date with the
clippers.
“I find it a bit strange that so many people want to see my bald head,” says deMontigny. “My family,
friends, and colleagues have been very generous with their donations, which is excellent news for the Saskatchewan Cancer
Agency. We hope to raise a lot of money in this fundraiser, and I am very happy to participate and support the engineering
students.”
Beginning today and continuing until Wednesday, March 12, the RESS will be also be raising funds for the Saskatchewan
Cancer Agency through “Pie in the Eye.” For a minimum donation of $5.00, anyone can purchase a whipped cream
pie to be sent to someone in Regina. The recipient can then accept the pie in the face for free, or pay a fee to have the
pie delivered to someone else instead.
Over the next couple of days, anyone can donate to the “Head Shave for Cancer” fundraiser or order a “Pie
in the Eye” for someone. Arrangements can be made in person at the RESS Office (ED 127) or by telephone at 581-6952.
