University of Regina to host international Sherlock Holmes conference
We all know Sherlock Holmes, but what do we know about the man who created this fictional character? Learn about the renowned author, Arthur Conan Doyle at the "International Arthur Conan Doyle Symposium: Re-examining Arthur Conan Doyle," on November 7-8, 2008 at the University of Regina.

Andrew Lycett, author of Conan Doyle: The Man Who Created Sherlock Holmes will deliver the keynote address entitled "Arthur Conan Doyle: What We Know and What We Still Need to Know" at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Language Institute, LI 215, University of Regina campus. His talk is free and open to the public.

Other conference events include, "An Evening with Sherlock Holmes: Early Film Adaptations of the Holmes Stories," presented by the Department of Media Production and Studies (Faculty of Fine Arts) and "Researching Arthur Conan Doyle: A Panel Discussion," hosted by the Dr. John Archer Library at the University of Regina. The discussion will feature panelists: Peggy Perdue (Toronto Public Library); Andrew Lycett and Tim Johnson (University of Minnesota). An exhibit of rare Arthur Conan Doyle materials will also be on display at the Dr. John Archer Library.

Andrew Lycett was educated at Charterhouse and Christ Church, Oxford.  As a foreign reporter he specialized in Africa and the Middle East.  A full-time author since the early 1990s, he has written a number of highly acclaimed biographies and lives in north London.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Regina, the Humanities Research Institute and the Government of Canada (Canada Research Chairs).
