The role documentary photography plays in addressing human rights issues will be the subject of the inaugural "Forward Together" public lecture at the University of Regina on March 31.  The address, which will be given by world-renowned documentary photographer and poet Carlos Reyes-Manzo, will feature examples of photographic work Reyes-Manzo has conducted around the world.

In his lecture, Reyes-Manzo will discuss how documentary photography addresses social justice and human rights issues and can influence public perception and effect social change. He will examine questions such as:

• Is the role of social documentary photography to denounce human rights injustices?
• What are poverty and suffering and how do we represent these concepts?
• Should the world see poverty and suffering produced by war and greed?

Reyes-Manzo was born in Chile. Following that country's military coup in 1973, he spent two years in prison and was exiled to Panama. He has been living in the United Kingdom since 1979. He has travelled extensively throughout Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia documenting people who are marginalized from society and suffer human rights abuses. He has held more than 30 solo exhibitions around the world. His work is published regularly in books, newspapers and magazines.

The "Forward Together" lecture is co-sponsored by the University of Regina, Campion College, Luther College, and First Nations University of Canada.
