"University of Regina Day" at Shandong University commemorates strong relationship between the two universities

A delegation from the University of Regina has returned from a trip to China, where Shandong University declared March 9, 2011 "University of Regina Day" to commemorate the strong relationship between the two institutions.

Shandong University's Vice-President Zhang Yun welcomed University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons and they toured an exhibition of the co-operation between the two universities.

"On behalf of everyone at the University of Regina, I would like to thank Shandong University for having declared March 9 to be ‘University of Regina Day,'" said President Timmons. "It was a great honour, and a wonderful way to celebrate a longstanding relationship that has contributed so much to the culture and identity of our campus."

It was 30 years ago this month - in March 1981- that a formal agreement was signed between the University of Regina and Shandong University to develop Chinese Studies in Regina and Canadian Studies in Shandong. Since then, the University of Regina has had eight agreements with Shandong University.

There are currently nine students from Shandong University registered as undergraduate students at the University of Regina and there is a visiting scholar from Shandong University at the University of Regina. In August 2010, 17 students from the University of Regina studied at Shandong University for four weeks.

Shandong University is located in the city of Jinan. It has a full-time student population of more than 40,000 and offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.

During her visit, President Timmons invited officials from Shandong University to visit the University of Regina in October 2011, when the 30-year partnership between the University of Regina and China will be formally celebrated.
