Former Regina Mayor and newly-appointed CEO of Saskatchewan Tourism, Pat Fiacco, was presented with the third annual President’s Community Award by University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons today.
“Pat Fiacco is very deserving of this award,” said Timmons. “He has been a champion of this city and province for many years, and a strong advocate for the University of Regina. Working tirelessly to promote Regina through initiatives like the nationally known ‘I Love Regina’ campaign, he has brought a renewed sense of pride to our city. At the same time, he has worked passionately to fulfill an ambitious vision for Regina’s social, community and economic development, building a legacy that will serve our city well for years to come.”
Fiacco was elected Mayor of Regina in 2000 and served four terms in that position. An active member of local, provincial and national communities, he served on many organizations and on several boards, including: the Regina Regional Economic Development Authority (RREDA); Mayor’s Task Force on Regina’s Future; Regina Board of Police Commissioners; Regina Crime Prevention Commission; Wascana Centre Authority; Big City Mayors’ Caucus; Canadian Capital Cities Organization; and the Saskatchewan City Mayor’s Caucus.
Throughout his term as Mayor, Fiacco also maintained an active interest in sport. He served at the 2012 London Olympic Games and as a boxing referee and judge at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and has held provincial and Canadian amateur boxing championships, such as Canada’s amateur bantamweight crown. He has also served as the Head Official of Boxing Canada and contributed to the Ken Goff Memorial Boxing Classic, Sask Sport and Hockey Regina.
“I am humbled by this recognition,” said Fiacco. “I have always been passionate about Regina, and if you love what you do, it never feels like you're going to work. The community has given me more than I could ever possibly repay. Thank you to President Timmons for this award."
The President’s Community Award was created in 2010 in keeping with the University’s commitment to serve the provincial community and to recognize those who have a strong history of working to better the lives of others in Saskatchewan. It honours individuals or organizations whose values, history of service to Saskatchewan and concern for our communities have made a lasting impact on the province.
Past recipients of the award include former Prince Albert Mayor Jim Scarrow for his leadership in the area of Aboriginal education and Roger L. Brown, Commanding Officer of "Depot" Division, in celebration of the RCMP “Depot” Division’s 125 years of service to the province.
