Reading Week means a break from classes, but not a break from work for students in the Faculty of Arts who are taking part in the Arts CARES program.

Now in its sixth year, the full title of the program is Arts Community Action in Regina for Educational Service.
In all, 51 students are volunteering with 21 community organizations, including AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan, Carmichael Outreach, and SOPHIA House.

The students are doing a variety of tasks, including developing websites, writing newsletters, and doing research.
“The students get great hands-on experience and learn more about the community,” explains Yolanda Hansen, co-ordinator of the University’s Community Research Unit, which co-ordinates the Arts CARES program.

To listen to a full interview with Yolanda Hansen about the Arts CARES program, be listening to University Matters, on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at 6:00 pm on 91.3 CJTR-FM, Regina Community Radio. A podcast will be available after the show at http://cjtr.ca/podcasts/
