The former Director of Athletics at the University of Regina has been inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.

Dick White spent 34 years at the University including 20 as Director of Athletics. He will enter the Hall of Fame under the Building Category.

“I was surprised,” says White. “I’ve nominated people to the Hall of Fame. I’ve celebrated with people who have been inducted. So to think that I would be in that category – I was shocked initially and now I’ve moved on to just being happy as all heck.”

Just last week, White celebrated his induction into the University of Regina’s Sports Hall of Fame. Earlier, he was inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame.

“The job I had as athletic director at the University of Regina was a dream job, and to be recognized for a career of really hard work is very rewarding and makes the long hours and long days very worthwhile,” says White.

White graduated from the U of R in 1974 with a Bachelor of Education and worked as a physical education teacher in Arcola and Moosomin. He returned to the U of R in 1981 and excelled in a variety of positions.

“The job I had as athletic director at the University of Regina was a dream job and to be recognized for a career of really hard work is very rewarding and makes the long hours and long days very very worthwhile,” says White.

Under White's leadership the U of R’s Athletics department grew from six to 16 teams.
The University also hosted numerous national championships. White says among his greatest reward was his association with the athletes.

“We won’t always win. That’s the nature of being in sport,” says White. “But we produce some fantastic leaders in the community, people who will make a difference in this community. And I feel that is the true legacy of university athletics.”

White is one of seven people to be inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
The 49th annual induction ceremony will be held at the Conexus Arts Centre, June 13.

The University of Regina offers plenty of opportunities for students to participate in athletics. Most recently, the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies announced plans for a high performance centre to be located on campus. For more information please visit here.
