University of Regina and First Nations University of Canada jointly host national research showcase

The University of Regina and the First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) are hosting a week-long series of events to raise awareness about and profile First Nations, Métis and Inuit research. Imagining Canada’s Future: A First Nations, Métis and Inuit Research Showcase includes presentations on more than 25 topics, including suicide prevention among Indigenous youth, a pilot project on HIV/AIDs, the residential school claims process, and family income in First Nations communities.

The showcase opened on Monday, March 24 at 9:00 a.m. at the First Nations University of Canada.

“This showcase helps to increase the understanding of research carried out by First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples,” said University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons.

“The First Nations University of Canada is please to co-host this Research Showcase with the University of Regina,” Dr. Lynn Wells, Vice-President (Academic) of the First Nations University of Canada, said in her opening address. “This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the research being done by Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars at FNUniv and the University of Regina and to focus on issues of key importance to First Nations, Métis and Inuit people across the country.”

There are more than 30 guest speakers, including Jesse Archibald-Barber, Ed Doolittle, David Garneau, Kathy Lloyd, Andy Miller, Cassandra Opikokew and JoLee Sasakamoose.

The showcase is part of a national initiative for regional events highlighting areas of research in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the University of Regina, and the Ministry of Advanced Education.

“Research is vital to understanding issues facing the world,” says Dr. David Malloy, Vice-President of Research at the University of Regina. “The University of Regina is pleased to support this showcase and take the lead in this multi-university initiative for the Prairie Region because it demonstrates our commitment to the importance and value of research in the social sciences and humanities.”

Presentations are being made throughout the week at various locations including the First Nations University of Canada, the University of Regina main campus and College Avenue Campus, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and the Artesian Performance Venue.
