International celebration of Computer Science Education Week

Computer science education is gaining international attention because of the importance to citizens and societies to be engaged in the technology that is shaping the world. For the fifth straight year, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Regina is marking Computer Science Education Week from December 8-14. The public is invited to the following events:

• Screening of the documentary film “Code Kids”, followed by a discussion about Computer Science Education in Saskatchewan on December 11, 7 p.m., Research and Innovation Centre (RIC) theatre, U of R –  www.facebook.com/events/1529859430605023/
• LEGO Robotics open house, where teams of students aged 9-14 who are preparing for Saskatchewan’s first LEGO League tournament will show off their robots in action on December 13, 3 p.m., Multi-purpose room, Riddell Centre, U of R – www.facebook.com/events/378046552364550/

Last year, over 10 million students participated in the first Hour of Code, held in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week. This year, organizers would like to reach 100 million students. Everyone is encouraged to participate and each organizer will be recognized. For more information, visit http://hourofcode.com/ca. Amongst other prizes available, Brilliant Labs will provide the resources necessary, up to a value of $2000, to implement a technology based, hands on, student-centric learning project to one classroom in Saskatchewan.
